Pubs, Not Coffeehouses?
March 6th, 2003

According to the inquirer, IBS, Intel, and Ericsson will create a Wi-Fi network spanning the UK with thousands of nodes. From a networking standpoint, it’s interesting that they’re hooking up to existing social hubs.

Inspired has already started building the network, which it dubs The Cloud, and will link it to a national network of broadband connected games terminal in cooperation with BT Openzone.

The Cloud will pass over 250 locations in the UK by the end of April, Intel said, and will kick off with free trials services.

And it will start its service in “premium pub locations”, already the “business lunch venue of choice in many parts of the country”.

I just read that TMobile is dropping their prices to try to get business in their Starbucks access points. That they are getting AT MOST 6 users a day for each access point - far less business then they need to costs.

I’ve tried to work at starbucks. The quiet low traffic starbucks work well. The noisy high volume ones are a pain to try to do real work in. I wonder how pubs will do?
