WiFi Business Model Fu
June 10th, 2003

Boingo and Cometa Networks (amongst others) may have a very tough time making a buck from their business model, but there are other more simplistic model that could support the ongoing proliferation of free public Wi-Fi hot spots. Check out this inerview with Boingo’s Sky Dayton and page down to the “member comments.”

Better than selling ads through a syndication network in support of free hotspot access is selling ads directly to neighborhood retailers and other establishments. A hotspot location provides a unique opportunity for advertisers to present timely, location specific information. Imagine sitting in a hotspot and seeing an ad for a great sale or special event taking place within walking distance of where you’re sitting.

Very good idea, Jim — help keep the wealth circulating locally. Thanks!
