Ten Lies About — Embedded — Microprocessors
June 28th, 2003

In this article, published by Embedded Systems Programming, Jim Turley says that “processor selection too often turns into a religious war. Debunking the dominant myths is the first step towards making a rational choice.”

As the author explains, “newspapers proclaim that Intel has a 95% share of the microprocessor market.” In fact, “only about 2% of all microprocessors made drive PCs. The other 98% is embedded CPUs; Intel’s not even in the top five of that group.”

This summary lists Turley’s ten dominant myths, like another good one, “Java chips are coming.” Here is a quote.

So’s Christmas. Actually, Christmas is a lot closer because it’s going to be here this year. Java chips have more in common with Santa Claus than Christmas: a nice fable for na‚àö√Æve young engineers who aren’t yet old enough to know better.

My summary also includes selected excerpts. But read the original — and humorous — article if you have more time.
