Residents in Illinois can determine whether they’re eligible for public assistance by clicking on the Internet. The Illinois Department of Human Services has set up an online calculator that lets users find out whether they qualify for food stamps, cash or medical benefits. Applying online is also provided.
The service is one of several computerized advances put into place by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to make services more available and cut down on staff time needed to answer basic questions.
“Residents want timely information delivered quickly and conveniently” The governor also provides an electronic newsletter. “With our digital newsletter, they can get state information by simply checking their PDAs or cell phones,” a spokesman said.
The “Online-not-in-line”-initiatives are set up to make a difference for “families who need help right away”. No longer will they have to wait in line or make constant phone calls and office visits for services. The program includes kiosks at state offices.
