Spirit of America, which came recommended to me by a friend and endorsed by bloggers whose judgement I trust, is collecting money from volunteers in the USA to go to projects in Iraq that directly improve the quality of life for Iraqi citizens. This is a nonpartisan effort. It’s what we should have started doing a long time ago. It’s collective action facilitated by online media — a smart mob. In this case, a wise mob, as well.

I have to say I was unprepared for the “I want you” banner of Uncle Sam being the first thing seen on the site. I would not think a military recruiting poster would be what one would pick to greet people seeking to make contact with Iraqi grassroots.
I’m also pretty surprised to see that the only way to make requests is through someone in the service. The majority of Iraqi population does not trust the US, I think having requests go through military personnel will likely disqualify a large segment of Iraqi civil society from entry into the process. There’s a large body of NGO’s on the ground that Iraqis may be more trusting of, I hope SoA will be willing to take requests from them as well.
