The Yankee Group said that radio frequency ID tags (RFID) in the US may eliminate up to 4 million jobs that are now held by people who manually check barcodes. The analysts say that some positions will be lost altogether, but points out that the technology will free many of these workers to perform higher-value jobs instead of the mundane tasks that RFID will replace. The researchers predict that manufacturing companies will spend USD5 billion on RFID technology over the next three years.
