Mobile TV
July 11th, 2004

With mobiles starting to dominate our daily lives, there is growing interest in the idea of TV on the phone.

Screen technology itself has advanced in the last few years, making the viewing experience much more enjoyable.

Cost, it seems, will be an important factor in mobile TV’s success.

In Europe, trials in Berlin and Helsinki are using existing terrestrial TV masts to broadcast compressed signals to handsets with additional receivers.

I was recently in Japan, and I actually saw the ads for these TV phones. They feature a group of young men watching a soccer game in a resturant, and after a goal, the owner (?) of the phone closes it to call a friend, supposedly to discuss the play.

The joke among my fellow ???? was that he had to close it simply because watching that *one* play drained his battery.

My point is that batteries (or fuel cells) have to come a long way before I’ll watch the telly on my phone.
