Cash cow for the operators

This article in the International Herald Tribune says that “text messaging has become serious business for the carriers.According to the GSM Association,an industry group,Britons alone send about two billion such messages each month, and mainland Chinese sent more than 131 billion messages last year.Even the United States,long hindered by a Babel of technical standards,is catching on.Small wonder that the operators waited until we were hooked to charge for the service”.
