Virtual Meetings Through ‘Telepresence’
March 25th, 2005

If the efforts currently underway at the Universities of Calgary and Alberta (U of A) are successful, you might soon be able to chat and have a real dinner with your spouse sitting in front of you even if you’re thousands of miles away from her.

Pierre Boulanger, professor of computing science at U of A, has just received $1.7 million to develop new and inexpensive ‘telepresence’ tools to do just these kinds of tricks, and much more according to CBC News in Canada.

“The technology could allow surgical instructors to transmit hand and scalpel movements thousands of kilometres across a computer network, where the movements would be recreated.”

Or you’ll build a 3D model of the Earth core on your computer and a teammate will be able to reconstruct it and interact with it at the other end of the world. Read more for other details and references.

Right now, my son is playing online on his Sony playstation with several other gamers. Each one of them has created his/her own persona or character, and they are interacting, competing, negotiating and otherwise socializing, although they don’t know each other, don’t know where the other lives, what he/she looks like, what his/her age is. To me this is just a form of telepresence.

If Sony or some other company created a similar virtual meeting place, whether it looked like a conference room, classroom, stage or hotel, couldn’t business and scientific virtual meetings be held? If an industry created a virtual map of its premises and machinery, couldn’t a troubleshooting expert weave his/her way through the system and detect and resolve problems. The amazing thing about this is the low cost and available technology which can be used to solve major problems with less resources. One expert could visit many sites in a single day and deal with a variety of problems, without wasting time in travelling to the scattered sites. A scientist could attend only the presentation he/she is interested in, instead of travelling and wasting time to sit through the whole conference. Busy businesspersons could attend business meetings across the globe as easily as if in the next room.

I am working on software that allows this be done, and believe it has vast business potentials. I would be interested in discussing mutual cooperation with other developers and venture capatilists.
