Over the past three months in South Africa, scores of drug dealers have been arrested and thousands of rands’ worth of drugs seized, according to IOL.

The exercise was part of a 702′ SMS campaign earlier this year in which listeners were invited to forward information about criminal activity to the station’s SMS number, 31702.

Within minutes, they responded in their hundreds, supplying names, addresses, telephone numbers and vehicle registration details of suspected drug dealers.

“We received 180 messages within three hours. The quality of the information was exceptional. Some of the SMS’s were very specific, giving times, naming schools and describing the dealers,” said the station’s weekday breakfast host, John Robbie.

The campaign has now become so popular the station has decided to run it once a month.
