Tagzania, tagging the planet with Google Maps
July 24th, 2005

Now, we have maps + tags:

Tagzania is about tags and places. If you register and log in, you can add places, points, to create and document your maps. When you add a point, you may tag it with keywords. That way, Tagzania is not only a place to build and keep your own maps, shared territories are created as well.

All pages have RSS and the content is open. The teacher in me is wondering how to use this tool at school. If you open a tag/map, you can add a new item with a click on the place. It is a nice (and collaborative) way to do something in the class.

at least two or three other services have offered the same thing for a long time now. For instance, see foundcity.net

Hi Sean

Foundcity is only for eight cities in North America and Europe. However, thanks for the comment.

The original site is ‘beenmaped.com’.

  • beenmapped.com was released on July 11th
  • tagzania.com was registered just on July 11th in order to copy the original tool ‘beenmapped.com’.

    Hi Glaxkor!

You know much about tagzania. Were you involved in the development? How did you know that they built it only in 8 days, after seeing beenmapped? (domain registered on 11th, published on 19th)

Do you really think that people copies sites this way? Do you think that both sites are so similar that a copy is the only explanation?

Tags (del.icio.us) and maps (googlemaps) are the hottest thing in the net in the last months, so mixing them up, is it so original and creative?

I have used both beenmapped.com and tagzania.com and can assure they are completely different and tagzania.com rocks! beenmapped.com does not have tags. I guess they have keywords, but I am not sure they work the same way tagzania.com tags work. In beenmapped.com, currently I find no way to list my own bookmarks so that I can edit/delete them. tagzania.com list bookmarks by tags, by user and by user + tags. In the lists shown, I can edit/delete bookmarks of mine.
