Stray cows and race horses getting tagged
August 12th, 2005

Authorities in Delhi have turned to microchips to tackle the growing problem of stray cows roaming the streets, reports BBC News.

A court had earlier ordered authorities in south Delhi to offer a reward of $45 to anyone delivering a stray cow. The authorities then sell the cow to a new owner but they are concerned people might take advantage by bringing back the same cow for quick money.

A $11 microchip in the cow’s gut will now allow resident welfare associations to determine whether the cow brought to the authorities was a stray one or not.

Meanwhile, Japan plans to use RFID tags to identify race horses. Tags will be injected on the back of horses’ necks.

They will use LF tags (134.2kHz) with integrated temperature sensors. All race horses born in or after 2007 must get RFID’d otherwise they cannot be in a race. (via RFID in Japan)
