Sorry, but technology won’t solve this one. Unless the FAA revamps the common strategy approach to hijacking, not much is going to happen.

Arming flight crews with high-tech equipment isn’t going to do much until the FAA mandates a new approach towards the ways in which flight crews manage hijackers. The approach hasn’t changed in 30 years, and TWA flight 847 has long been considered the model for how flight crews should manage hijackers.

As with so many things, the issue with inflight security is process and training. Tens of thousands of flight crew professionals will need to be trained on whatever this new strategy strategy is and whatever new equipment the strategy entails. This costs significant amounts of money at a time when the industry is cutting pay and shedding pension plans. In other words, it’s highly doubtful that the FAA is going to dump this one onto the industry at this time.
