Sony CDs’ antipiracy software
November 2nd, 2005

Many in the blogosphere have started justifiably making noise about Sony’s incorrigible DRM software on music CDs, discovered by Mark Russinovich at the Sysinternals blog. The program is a rootkit, a kind of software for Windows that is hidden from users and cannot be uninstalled manually. Sony has released an update that uninstalls it.

This update doesn’t uninstall, just “decloaks” it. http://www.livejournal.com/users/metaphorge/848689.html

you’re right. I was fooled by sneaky language at the Sony website: “this update has been released to enable users to remove this component from their computers.” ‘This component’ meaning the cloaking component.
