Is Google’s Zeitgeist, its collective portrait of what search terms are most used, looking eerie when you overlay it on events? (Thanks, Seth!)

This year brought a great deal of tumult: international intrigue, terrorist alerts and attacks, dissension among factions of every kind. And we witnessed the passing of such major figures as the Pope and Rosa Parks. In tumultuous times, people turn to news sources to track events. Our weekly zeitgeist lists illustrate a keen curiosity about newsmakers and headlines as they occur. In looking at search query patterns in depth, we chose a few newsworthy events, and some that continued to play out over the months – or in one case, years.
