This article in the age says “a landmark moment went largely unnoticed recently when the 2 billionth phone using the world’s most popular mobile technology was connected. Last month’s figure brings to about 2.5 billion the total number of mobile phones on the planet.Australia, with a 94 per cent market penetration, has 19 million mobile connections - a number expected to rise by 16.9 per cent this financial year”.Further,”Australia has the fourth highest mobile penetration in the Asia-Pacific region, behind Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.SMS and MMS remain the most popular forms of mobile communication, with 6.74billion SMSs and 49.8 million MMSs sent in Australia last financial year.The average bill fell 1.6 per cent in the 12 months to March, while call volumes increased 12 per cent.7.7 million handsets were sold last year, up from 7.1 million the previous year”.
