The newspaper Sovietskaya Rossia recently celebrated its 50th birthday. Its motto, “Talking with the people in the people’s own voice,” says it all. Even if the newspaper’s circulation is now around 300,000, down from 4.5 million at the end of the 1980s, half of its contents is written by its readers. And some of them started as early as 1919. So were they bloggers, writers, or informants?

Russia a already a lot of bloggers; http://www.narod.ru = 500 000 people. livejournal in Russia: 300000 people and we recently launched typepad in Russia with 3 portails http://www.wmjblogs.ru http://www.blogmania.ru and http://www.blogsit.ru
Russian internet is more “contact” oriented then western internet (for example there are 4 millions of people in ICQ in Russia). The big internet companies aren’t in Russia: no ebay, few google (google adsense and adwords don’t work very good and have bigger local competitors)
Newsgroups very good work.
