Camera phones put Tiger on the clock
July 25th, 2006

The paradoxical rule announced at the Open Championship as each group teed off was no cameras, and mobile phones must be kept in the off position. The rule said nothing about phones that had cameras. Tiger tells us what happened:

. . . some of the fans distracted the players by snapping camera phones and forcing the golfers to back off their shots.

‘We had it every hole,’ Woods said. ‘We’ve never seen anything like this before. It wasn’t the professional photographers; it was the gallery. It was very frustrating for Sergio and I because of the undue delays that we had with our caddies. We got put on the clock, and it wasn’t our fault, but that’s the way it goes.’ NY Times
