The BBC’s Digital Planet programme asks “could text messaging between air traffic controllers and pilots make flying safer?”At “the Eurocontrol centre in Maastricht air traffic controllers are testing a system to contact pilots without using radios. Datalink allows the controllers to send messages that appear on a screen on the flight deck of specially equipped planes. This, the controllers say, will become an increasingly important way of communicating with pilots as air traffic grows in the coming years”.
