Plan to install WiFi in NYC parks not going well
October 23rd, 2006

Anytime the NYC goverment tries to do something - you can expect delays - installing wireless networks in NYC parks is no exception.

Two years ago, the city Department of Parks and Recreation awarded a contract to set up wireless Internet access in 10 city parks, but to date, only two of those parks are up and running.

According to this story in today’s New York Post, there seems to be quite a bit of bureaucratic bungling going in the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, including the demanding of a $1.5 million insurance policy from a community group who wanted to install a free hotspot at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, which is just outside the United Nations complex.

It looks like there are a lot of parties that are involved in this project and it appears that everyone is chasing each other’s tail in circles.

Who needs the government when you have FON (http://en.fon.com/). I believe that easy Wifi access will come from the public rather than from institutions…
