Should users profit from “user-generated content?”
November 2nd, 2006

I’m trying to provoke some intelligent conversation about this subject, in the wake of the GoogTube acquisition, over at the DIY Media blog that Mimi Ito, Adrienne Russell, and I have started for the Annenberg Center. I evoke posts from Jeff Jarvis and Henry Jenkins.

I’ve been researching this question for the last year through in-home observation and interviews with internet users and have found that the majority of them are more that willing to share generously without promise of compensation.

What has surprised me even more is that the research suggests most are willing to allow content hosting providers, like YouTube, to charge others for their contributions. Of course there has to be a fair exchange. If you charge for their content, you must give them superior tools to help them create and control who has access to it.

That’s what I’ve seen so far.
