No Cellular service in NYC Subways anytime soon
November 9th, 2006

Often, when I’m on a subway train and I want to check my mail messages or browse the internet on my Tmobile SideKick 3, I can’t. And it does not look like that’s going to change anytime soon because Cellular service in NYC subway stations not coming anytime soon.

According to MTA officials, establishing this kind of system is “complex” and would be very expensive to implement, so they are being very deliberate in how they approach this project, which would allow for service in stations but not into subway tunnels.

Guess we shouldn’t be surprised. What do you expect from a market in which the CEO of one of the leading carriers thinks people have too high expectations when they expect their mobile phones to work at home… Pretty amazing really, you often hear that the mobile market in Japan is so different from the US as Americans don’t use public transportation. And when they do, they can’t use mobiles anyway. Oh well, maybe we get some competition in the US at some point as well…

So many Americans don’t realize what a technological backwater we are when it comes to mobile communications.

Hey, how am I going to get rid of annoying callers if I can’t say, “Sorry going into the Subway now.”
