Kids becoming more literate?

Interesting piece in the Technology Review about how the next generation of kids will read and write based on the current adoption of text messaging, etc.

Some suggest that kids are becoming more literate as a result of a greater reliance on reading and writing in text messaging and emails. I don’t know if many high school English teachers would agree with that statement (depends on how you define literacy), but kids are certainly needing to be more “literate” in a greater variety of communication forms beyond the written word. Video, audio, mashups etc.are increasingly part of the communications, sharing, and learning lexicons. Personally, I think it’s quite exciting and ripe with new possibilities!
