Smart mob thinking for ventures in China
December 28th, 2006

China Venture blog considers some of the incidents that we’ve noted in smartmobs.com in terms of opportunities for business ventures in China:

We are used to thinking of the Web in terms of taking physical interaction out of the communication equation. We know the ability of email, instant messaging, forums, blogs, and social networks to enable us interact with each other without leaving our homes. What I am referring to is the ability of these applications to organize the way we interact outside the home, on the ground, face to face.

The opportunity for entrepreneurs is this: Create web and mobile tools that specifically facilitate face-to-face interaction. Ideally this means web services that provide mobile services as well, especially location based services.

This is a global market opportunity, but is especially so in China. The case I mention above describes events where interaction via BBS’s and SMS facilitated large scale action on the ground. It demonstrates how the Chinese will use these types of tools to organize activities on the ground that are high impact and have high numbers of participation.
