Is Twitter Here to Stay?

The new online messaging tool Twitter is hot. MIT Technology Review deals with the question wether it will last.

Twitter essentially turns the one-to-one channels of instant messaging and phone-based SMS text messaging into broadcast media. Twitterers resemble bloggers, except that most updates have a rawer, more dashed-off flavor–which is to be expected, since they’re also far shorter and more ephemeral than blog posts.

As a Smartmobs blogger I personally think Twitter is a killer. For that reason I am giving it an extensive try with my twitterfeed gervis. Twittering Smart Mobs readers may add me as a Twitter friend, if they want.

It’s almost there, but Twitter still has too much collateral damage for my taste. I’m not yet ready to advocate its use in my (real world) groups until there’s some straightforward way to filter and cluster the traffic — groups of friends would be the most useful next step. Some geo filtering would also be wicked cool.

I use the widget to add Facebook-like status updates to my blog sidebar, but for now I’ve turned off updates to my phone till my friends stop telling me about making coffee or sneezing first thing in the morning.

It is amazing how easy Twitters enables you to connect to people that you know by name from their writings. It is very much worth the effort to invest some time analyzing the friends list (social network) of people you are familiar with because of some common interest. I find this type of networking quite revolutionary. Knowledge Management is for me utilizing the opportunities to connect to inspiring people. Connecting to inspiring individuals is connecting to their contexts, to their view of the world. And that is when sharing and collaboration and learning can start. Learning faster than your competitors is still a major advantage.
