Having their say
April 30th, 2007

The guitarist in the picture above is a young Iraqi. In background of the video in which he appears on hometownbagdad.com, he is singing words that are difficult to understand to the unmistakable tune of ‘My Way.’ Hometown Baghdad’s subtitle is A web documentary series about life in Baghdad. The website bristles with series of videos shot by Iraqi filmakers and produced by Chat the Planet. The speakers in the videos are all Iraqis who are in their early twenties and for whom the videos are a chance to say what they think about their lives and country. Viewing some of the taped comments struck me as a remarkable example of the connectivity that has emerged very recently: freedom and technology to allow young people to sing and say ‘my way.’
