Coming of the iPhone … Dell, HP, Intel, IBM, and any IT company will suddenly need a cellphone strategy
May 19th, 2007

There’s so much information in and high quality thoughts in Tomi Ahonen’s recent post Entering iPhone Era: Marking Time in Mobile that I don’t know where to start … since it’s just worth it to read Tomi’s post - see what you make of it for yourself.

For me - it’s quite a jump when he says:

June 2007 marks a watershed moment in time. Much like the Western calendar marks time from before and after Jesus Christ, and how the computer world changed totally by the Macintosh - remembering that Windows is Microsoft’s copy of the Mac operating system - I am certain that the mobile telecoms world will count its time in two Eras. The Era BI: time Before the iPhone, and the ERA AI: time After the iPhone.

What will change? Pretty much everything. And funnily enough, most of it is not actually caused by the iPhone, they only happen to occur so closely to the iPhone, that the iPhone will be given much of the credit.

Is the coming of the iPhone that important? Apparently - and it even extends to Tomi’s resume:

New jobs. I need to update my CV. This is the new dawn of the computer age. The real revival after the dot-com bust. Suddenly everybody is rejecting job offers because even better ones are made simultaneously. Except that compared with last time, this time the fastest truly are the Blackberry and SMS generation who snatch the best deals at the last moments with the fastest communications

And from my point - will I buy one? Probably I will - how can I not? - Especially as it’s going to be all that Tomi T Ahonen and others say it’s going to be - and I respect their opinions.

The issue I have is who the provider is going to be? - will there be a Tmobile iPhone - or will we all end up using Apple as a wireless provider? …and is Apple in that market?

So I have to believe that every wireless vendor is going to have an Apple iPhone that works with their service…but I don’t know enough about it yet.

From an IT Perspective - I thought this statement from Tomi was very interesting….

Microsoft, Dell, HP, Intel, IBM, any IT company will suddenly want a cellphone strategy. Mobile experts will suddenly be in short supply. Crazy job offers will be everywhere. Oh, and if you want a quick boost to your mobile credentials, Oxford runs its short courses on 3G mobile technology in the first weeks of July - featuring also your fave author-blogger-podcasters Alan and Tomi - come there to pick up a certificate in the topmost training in mobile, and be in hot demand in the AI age)

I’ll try to work with the Web Analytics Association to bring Mobile Web Metrics as part of what the Web Analytics Association tracks - I was just elected as to the Board of Directors of the Web Analytics Association - focusing on Community, Social Networking tools, Blogs, RSS Feeds, etc.

Shortly, I’ll be looking for members who can fill two chairs and work with me for the new Community committee set up for this purpose to deliver value to Web Analytics Association members (to communicate with each other and accelerate the value the WAA brings to it’s members) - and that benefits analytics and metrics overall, as Web Analytics is what many companies need to determine the value of all this is, ongoing.

To be a chair on the new committee or a WAA volunteer - join the Web Analytics Association as either a practitioner or, in the case of a student, student memberships are available - and Corporate Members are always welcome (hint- Apple - Nokia, etc).

Recently at a beer-oriented meetup of tech/geek/new media bloggers in Atlanta, I got labeled as a harbinger of The Next Big Thing: once I complained about how stupid something was on my blog, it was about to take off. So my current pooh-poohing of the iPhone may be a good indicator of what a revolutionary device it will be, but here I go anyway!

I pay attention to SmartMobs because of my interest in citizen journalism as enabled by mobile devices like camera phones. The iPhone may be an amazing gadget to keep us happy with fun things like our iTunes and knowing when it’s sideways, but as far as capturing a moment and sharing it instantly with the world goes, there’s still a massive, gaping hole in the package: iPhone don’t do movies. “Not yet,” anyway, as “they” say.

Without video capture, how is the iPhone that revolutionary in the arena of Smart Mobs? When I want to document a rally, a protest, a politician’s public remarks, I need video, right away. The geek get-together in Atlanta included the visiting Steve Garfield and his amazing high-quality-video-capturing, WiFi-enabled Nokia N95. The Nokia N-series phones have been offering for months everything the smart mobber could ever need (AND you can buy a spare battery!), you just can’t pick one up at your local T-Mobile shop because the US telecom industry is so awesome.

I’m a Mac user and lover, but I’ve got my eye on a Nokia when my birthday rolls around.

ok…fair enough that I can’t avoid some bias given where I work…but $500 bucks for a phone…not for me, no matter where I worked. They will sell a bunch of them to be sure, but apple is late to this game.

I haven’t seen anything in what Apple is doing here that advances the world of social media…but I may be missing it, maybe I’ll go read all those apple employee blogs to learn about what they are doing…uh wait, those don’t exist… :)

You know, whether iPhone’s going to reach it’s target sales or not, I have to admit that it’s a remarkable piece of technology. It’s beautiful, it’s simple and it’s an eye candy. And obviously, it’s expensive.
