Universities creating academic programs on social media

The Wall Street Journal ran a story, “At Some Schools, Facebook Evolves From Time Waster to Academic Study“, that talks about universities that are establishing new academic programs in social media.

For many schools, this is an attempt to reverse enrolement declines in their IT related programs by making them more interesting, concrete and relevant to incoming students.

Sounds good. Even for those of us that this might be an interesting course as a part of a continuing education plan.

As part of its Public Relations degree, Bournemouth University includes Internet Mediated Public Relations which gives students insights into strategy, application, risk assessment and management, monitoring and evaluation. The course covers existing and emerging social media (about 30 existing Social Media channels) with associated case studies.
