the Metaverse Roadmap (MVR)
June 28th, 2007

Jamais Cascio of Open the Future explored the virtual and 3D future of the World Wide Web in a first-ofits-kind cross-industry public foresight project, the Metaverse Roadmap (MVR).

What happens when video games meet Web 2.0? When virtual worlds meet geospatial maps of the planet? When simulations get real and life and business go virtual? When you use a virtual Earth to navigate the physical Earth, and your avatar becomes your online agent? What happens is the metaverse.

‘Roadmapping is a tested industry foresight process that uses diverse “Wisdom of Crowds” inputs from competing and collaborating experts to discover and map areas of agreed opportunity, uncertainty, and technological, economic and social challenges to further development,” said John Smart, president, ASF.

Jamais write-up is a scenario-heavy look at the implications of emerging virtual world/augmented reality technologies, based on the 2006 Metaverse Roadmap Project meeting. Participants in the conference included Esther Dyson, Raph Koster, Ted Castronova, Robert Scoble, Beth Noveck, and lots more.
