Second Life for Good
August 9th, 2007

Despite all of the negative publicity that Second Life has recieved recently (bank runs, thuggery, declining corporate presence, etc.) there is some GOOD stuff happening as well on the popular virtual world platform. On August 14 a nonprofit commons will be launched…

32 Nonprofits and their supporters will host a grand opening celebration Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. PT/SLT, in their new locations at the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life, http://www.nonprofitcommons.org. This nonprofits-only space, managed by TechSoup, creates and houses a community of nonprofits in the online virtual world of Second Life. The Gala event will be a mixed-reality launch party, complete with networking, a panel of speakers. Audio and video content will be streamed live between the two worlds. RSVP on the San Francisco NetSquared Meetup site to attend the live, real-world event, http://netsquared.meetup.com/1/

Will be interesting to see how (and if) nonprofits use this space and virtual worlds in general moving forward. For more on how nonprofits and NGOs will likely be influenced by and leverage emerging technologies moving forward, check out this Nonprofits of the Future podcast.
