Protester flap kicked off by boots on YouTube

Riding on a train yesterday from Montreal to New York City, I happened to sit next to a senior government administrator from Ottawa. When our conversation drifted into smart mobbing (as mine usually do) she told me about the major story in Canada that unfolded over the past week. It is summarized in a in a CTV.ca report here and an Associated Press story here.

My seat mate explained what happened: a YouTube video of protesters during the visits of Presidents Bush and Fox to Montebello contained images of three of the protesters whose boots had yellow markings like police boots. She said that after initially resisting admitting that the three were police officers, the Quebec police defended the placement of their men in the crowd. In the CTV.ca story, the cutline beneath the image above this post says:

In this image taken from the scene, the ‘protesters’ and police are wearing similar boots, although the boots on the ‘protesters’ appear to have duct tape and spray paint on them.
