New York City Council pushes against mayor on school cell phones
September 12th, 2007

New York’s City Council voted to allow students to carry cell phones to and from school. It is unclear what effect this will have on NYC schools, since the city’s mayor, who has authority over them, maintains his no-phone policy.

Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday that it “doesn’t change anything.”

“You’ve always had the right to take a phone to school and take a phone from school,” Mr. Bloomberg told reporters. “You just don’t have the right to bring it into the school, and that’s not changing.”
