Internet visionary criticises any approach to internet safety that focuses on filters and stirring fear of cyber-stalkers.
As the Federal Government floods the media with warnings of online perils, an internet visionary has criticised any approach to safety that focuses on filters and stirring fear of cyber-stalkers. Author and academic Howard Rheingold (pictured) says parents should educate rather than censor their children.
He says that by censoring the internet “you are not encouraging a good relationship with your child”.
“There is a real fear that parents have that their kids are knowledgeable about the technology and they are not,” Rheingold says. “The answer has to do with trust and communication - talk to your kids about what they are doing online.”
Children may lie to their parents “but they may well find their way around” a filter, he says.
