Being picky about predictions
October 10th, 2007

WIRED’s Bruce Sterling has a blog post he titled The Good Old-Fashioned World Future Society. As he explains in his post, from a larger group of findings (predictions), the 10 he lists in his post are significant. Personally, having lived seven decades now, I have read and heard a lot of predictions. Several of those on the 10 listed in the post are perennial favorites of pessimists. A couple of the others seemed just politically correct. I don’t know if you would react to the list as I did, and recommend a look at them.

Here are 3 from the list that I thought were interesting. The one about a cashless society is surely a nobrainer; I can’t wait to start paying for things with buttons on my mobile:
1. The world will have a billion millionaires by 2025.
4. Counterfeiting of currency will proliferate, driving the move toward a cashless society.
10. More decisions will be made by nonhuman entities.

I would give this one five stars for pessimism and originality:
8. The number of Africans imperiled by floods will grow 70-fold by 2080.
