Source: MacWorld News: Myspace will open platform to external developers
The Web 2.0 Summit ends today. On Wednesday, Chris DeWolfe of MySpace announced, along with Rupert Murdoch that MySpace will be opening up its platform for developers. While to all extents and purposes, MySpace is emulating Facebook’s move, their plan is far more geared towards generating profit both for them and their external developers. A sandbox, where trial groups of users will test new applications will be created allowing what is in essence a soft-rollout for developers and the social network giant. MySpace is clearly uncomfortable with this decision and attempting to find a way, in the midst of a rollout, for actually monetizing their traffic and its potential growth through the medium of externally developed applications. This is another tentative move on MySpace’s part to leverage its content and user base towards making a profit. It also indicates, like their cd compilations and magazine, a desire to showcase quality output. They aren’t there yet, but we’re watching.
