NewsTrust.net receives MacArthur Grant
November 28th, 2007

NewsTrust.net has received a $450,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation to continue its work on improving the quality and trustworthiness of journalism by cultivating networks of reviewers from all parts of the political spectrum to smartmob news stories for accuracy, bias, fairness (disclosure — I am an adviser):

The non-profit social news network NewsTrust.net has just received a multi-year grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The $450,000 funding will allow NewsTrust.net to expand its ‘Web 2.0’ news review services and offer them to a broader community of users.

NewsTrust.net helps people find and share good journalism online. Its free web site provides quality news feeds, media literacy tools and a civic engagement network. Support from the MacArthur Foundation will be used to develop new review tools and web services, as well as to form partnerships with key online destinations, news providers, educational affiliates and non-profit organizations. NewsTrust.net aims to add value to these partner sites by helping them share quality news and information about issues of public interest.

“The explosion of new media outlets on the web, along with the consolidation of big media and the decline of public trust, have created a range of problems for democracy: information overload, misinformation, mistrust and civic apathy,” said founder and executive director Fabrice Florin, a former journalist and digital media entrepreneur. “NewsTrust.net offers a practical solution to these problems, by providing online tools to filter news reporting, evaluate information quality and share trusted content with other citizens.”

Unlike other social news sites, NewsTrust.net features news and opinions rated by its members based on quality — not just popularity. The site’s unique review tools empower the public to evaluate fairness, sourcing, context and other core journalistic principles. NewsTrust.net tracks quality ratings and reputation for each news publication under review, to help identify trustworthy sources. The service also ensures the reliability of its evaluations by rating its own reviewers and validating their expertise.
