Memory of 1985
April 21st, 2008

The masses of people surrounding the Pope’s visit to the US these days remind me of the contrast with 1985 when Pope John Paul II visited the Netherlands. It was during lunchhour in the city of the Hague that I took this snapshot when the Holy Father was on his way to the Peace Palace. The absence of a crowd at a Pope visit seems unlikely and hard to believe 23 years later. Dutch satirists mocked the happening in those days as the visit of ‘Popie Jopie’.
