The Future of Location Based Services
November 1st, 2008

eMarketer makes a strong case that location based services will have a tremendous update in the years to come.

“eMarketer estimates there will be over 63 million location-based service users worldwide this year, and 486 million in 2012″

Upon reading this article, think about how location based services could help increase the uptake of a “Smart Mob” culture and strengthen the foundation for broader mobile-activism.

How long have we been waiting for this?

And why are so many LBS US only?

Julian, you make a great point, “how long have we been waiting for this?” I believe that early adopters (such as yourself) have been waiting for broader uptake of location based services for quite some time. I would argue that the iPhone represents the tipping point for LBS service development and user adoption.

Regarding LBS only; well, I think Google is doing it’s best to remedy this. Maybe this is a matter of priorities for users. Americans tend to generally be more mobile, whereas Europeans, for example, tend to move within familiar areas and only exhibit increased mobility for leisure (vacations).

I think you (we) could explore this topic further.
