An article in Wired Campus today reports the analysis of comments from UNESCO as they unveiled a interactive online version of the latest edition of the Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger. Jennifer Howard, who wrote the article for Wired Campus, makes several interesting points that make the report well worth the read.
I would add that the camel in the picture from the online Atlas is probably laughing because the humans are struggling to communicate without using mobile phones and maps. In our era of the smart mob, the mobile and the internet have significantly slowed down the loss of languages by ending many, many pockets of linguistic isolation.
