DesignForMobile 2009 will convene in Kansas
March 27th, 2009

The second annual DesignForMobile, to be held in Lawrence, Kansas (near Kansas City), extends this welcome: “Speakers come from academia, industry, design, and research. We’re all interested in the user experience, but we come from many different disciplines to share.” I am proud to be among the speakers, and expect to learn a lot. My topic is “The Long Tail of Mobile Learning.”

In the dozen years I have been participating in the emergence of the online world, I have found edgy conferences in early development are gold mines of insights and contacts. DesignForMobile is that kind of conference, as mobile crosses tech/design/content thresholds in 2009.

I like the title–I think it encapsulates a lot of current thinking about where learning is heading in the future.
As our knowledge and society becomes some much more diversified and specializes the “long tail” certaintly conceptually captures the move away from standardized, mass education and the focus on self-directed, individual and collaborative networked learning. I like Breck’s focus on mobile learning since the learning we envision will be pervasive and independent of place and time. The mobile nature of the connection allows one to connect on an ad hoc as needed basis or to maintain a connection for collaboration to use when needed.
