The Internet As Playground and Factory: A Conference on Digital Labor, will be held at Eugene Lang College of The New School in New York City on November 12-14. An overview Introduction sets out the seminal questions arising “in the midst of massive transformations in economy, labor, and life related to digital media.”

I find it genuinely amazing to see topics on the program that are cutting edge now, and would have been utterly mystifying a handful of years ago. To name a few:

PERFORM OR ELSE: AMAZON.COM’S MECHANICAL TURK
THE IDEOLOGY AND EROTICS OF “PLAYBOR”
PARTICIPATION LITERACY AND DIGITAL LABOR (narrated by Howard Rheingold)
“IMMATERIAL LABOR”? WHAT ABOUT THE BODY?

There is much, much more. If you are interested in an eclectic sampling of the topics that digital labor touches, I suggest you spend some time on the Participants page, as I did. Clicking on the names will introduce you to experts, teachers, and participants in exciting new aspects of the venues digital.

The conference is free, with advance registration required.
