Is Facebook ebbing or the gorilla?
October 19th, 2009

A Washington Post report today titled Worldwide ebb posits that each social networking site that has come along has followed something like a bell curve path. The article does not call it a “bell curve” but describes that shape in the allegedly typical rise, peak, and fall in popularity. But we are dealing with networks here, and network curves follow power laws: networks form long tails.

gorillaRemember when Yahoo! became the gorilla and previous networks found smaller places toward the tail? Amazon did the same thing, as other online booksellers settled for lower spots on the tail.

It seems likely to me that Facebook has cascaded into the gorilla social network. The article does not seem to take that possibility into account.
