Insights into Smart Mobs in Bursts
May 7th, 2010

Underlying the mechanisms of smart mobs are the sciences of networks and complexity. Seminal network scientist Albert-Laszlo Barabasi has a new book just published: Bursts: The Hidden Pattern Behind Everything We Do. Barabasi discovered the power law nature of small-world networks. Increasingly, predications are made that network science will underly most of the great 21st century scientific discoveries and new understanding of human interaction.

This quotation from Amazon’s webpage about Bursts sketches how the book provides basic new insight into networks like smart mobs:

“In Linked, Barabasi showed us how complex networks unfold in space. In Bursts, he shows us how they unfold in time. Your life may look random to you, but everything from your visits to a web page to your visits to the doctor are predictable, and happen in bursts.”
-Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody
