The title of this post is the website headline of St. Mary’s School in St. Mary’s, Ohio describing their soon-to-be school-wide mobile learning. The students there are using smartphones in the classroom (and beyond) — literally “hands on” to learn. Scott Newcomb said to me in an email:
I am a fourth grade teacher in St. Marys, Ohio. We have been involved in a Mobile Learning project for the last two years. We have been using smartphones in the classroom. Every student in our school district from 3rd grade to 6th grade has their own mobile learning device! We will be adding seventh grade next year. Our goal is to have a mobile learning device in every student’s hand from 3rd grade to 12th grade! . . . Next year, we will have over 900 mobile learning devices in our school district!
We need to get the word out on mobile learning! We will be presenting at ISTE this summer in Denver, CO.
St. Mary’s School website includes this admonition from Albert Einstein: “The world we have created is a product of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

The students at St. Marys are doing an outstanding job of thinking out of the box. Along with the 3 R’s. The students are learning the 4 C’s (Critical thinking, Communication skills, Collaboration building, and Creativity/Innovation). The teachers have done an outstanding job of implementing the new technology without making a complete change in teaching styles.

My experience with the Mobile Learning Project has been very rewarding! Anytime you can make learning memorable, it has to be positive! This is accomplished by using the smartphones. Unmotivated students have become motivated. The smartphones are reaching all learning styles and students.
