Hallelujah Mobs
December 5th, 2010

Click on the image above to go to the YouTube page for a partially mob rendition, in a food court, of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah.

It is difficult to overstate the richness of this mobbing of human reactions and joy. You, like me, may have already received the link to this video more than once in your email. This morning more than 10 million visitors have viewed it on YouTube.

The frame I grabbed for the image above gives a nod to the mobile device for making the planned spontaneity possible. The music that is sung was as widely popular in the 18th century, as it now. I suppose if the mobile had been available in the 1700s to assemble some lead singers to surprise a mob in a pub or market, many amateur singers would have joined in, as they do in the 21st century food court.
