Scape the Hood debuted this past weekend, a collaboration between HP Labs and KQED where prerecorded sounds, music and narrative were cued by your GPS location as you walked along 3 blocks in San Francisco. It is part of the Digitial Storytelling Festival which has been running for 10 years. KQED’s 3 year old Digital Storytelling Initiative was a sponsor of the festival.
The experiment, called Scape the Hood, will transform a few seemingly drab city blocks into a landscape rich with sound, sights and stories. Using GPS-enabled HP iPAQ Pocket PCs and a location-based software platform developed by HP Labs, participants will be able to walk around the neighborhood and learn about its history and culture — and about impending changes to its character.

I like the idea of learning the history etc. of an area that I am traveling through - but the name seems really unfortunate - learn the hood or something like that would have been better - the current name implies that people are not able to experience their surroundings on their own - that they need a virtual interface to even perceive the environment that they are in, while they are in it or that the reality of their environment is just too much for them to bear (which could be true enough). Kind of like having to wear a hazardous materials suit and breather whenever you go out -

I took the name to be analogous to the popular scraper software that is used to produce quickie directories for the web. This still has a negative connotation for me, bur scraping does seem to be getting popular and if this meaning works for many then it’s a good name–I don’t see it in popular usage just yet. Maybe ahead of its time or ahead of a time that may not arrive.
On the other hand if Scrape the Hood catches on it will be a driver of this meaning…
The ‘hood’ part may be a problem for some, I can see walking around GG Park or the Marina but this may not go over so big in the Bayview, Hunter’s Point, etc.

That’s scape as in soundscape, landscape. Odd word to use as a verb but no odder than blog.

LOL, I guess my eyes deceived me. But “’scape” has an even odder double meaning as in ‘(es)scape the hood.’
Would that be “Movin’ on Up?’
