Politicians Try Out MySpace
October 15th, 2006

Politicians across the country are discovering that a presence on social-networking sites such as MySpace isn’t just a way of communicating with voters under 30, it is also a means of attracting volunteers and their donations. [via WSJ ]

… Political scientists, too, are paying attention to the online sites as a way to plant civic awareness in the minds of young adults. “Anything that gets young people involved in politics is great,” says University of Massachusetts political-science professor Ray La Raja. In teaching undergraduates, Mr. La Raja has struggled to find an approach that inspires students to become politically active. MySpace, he says, could be that venue.

Where’s the surprise?
College students in 2003.
High school students in 2004.
Middle school students in 2005.
Adult bottom feeders in 2006.
Looks like a logical progression to me. Did Mark Foley have a MySpace account? Somebody ask Daynah Boyd. The appearance of politics doesn’t appear to be anything remotely sophisticated.

In South FLorida, Ron Klein’s negative TV ad against Clay Shaw has an incorrect bill reference number and it has been running for weeks. Clay Shaw’s ad has a young man who wears a Marine’s cap and says he is a Marine endorsing Shaw. Out of uniform, endorsing a politician? Did I forget to mention Foley again? I wish Dr. David Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries was on a social site so I could tell you about his “Special” relating Darwin and Hitler.
